Senior Chief Wimbe of Kasungu East says the Mtunthama–Chamama earth road has been used by politicians as a campaign tool to win parliamentary seats, but promises to upgrade it into a tarmac road have never been fulfilled.
The chief has therefore pleaded with the country’s President and Malawi Congress Party (MCP) torchbearer Dr. Lazarus Chakwera to prioritize tarmacking the road if given a fresh mandate in the upcoming general elections.
Wimbe made the plea at Chamama Trading Centre in Kasungu North East Constituency while welcoming Dr. Chakwera to speak to the people who thronged the trading centre for a whistle-stop tour.
“The road connects scores of farmers, business people and people who seek health care and other social services at Kasungu Boma. These people are engulfed by dust, endure bumpy rides and sometimes fail to travel, especially in the rainy season due to its life-threatening condition. Please tarmac the road,” the chief pleaded.
Senior Chief Wimbe also stressed the need for upgrading rural health facilities as one way of decongesting Kasungu District Hospital.
In response, Dr. Chakwera said people need to vote for MCP to ensure continued development, including improved road infrastructure that meets the needs of rural communities.
He further assured the people that his government has put in place mechanisms to revive both rainfed and irrigation agriculture in the district, whose economy largely depends on farming. He also disclosed that his administration would ensure the country benefits from its mineral wealth.
In her remarks, MCP parliamentary candidate for Kasungu North East Madalitso Kambauwa Wirima commended the Chakwera-led government for budgeting the road in the 2025–2026 financial year.
On Tuesday, Dr. Chakwera also conducted a whistle-stop tour in Kasungu South East and Kasungu East, where the party has fielded Khumbize Kandodo Chiponda and Madalitso Kazambo, respectively for parliamentary seats.
