Kasungu municipal council to spend K805 million on Gonthi road pavement project

Kasungu Municipal Council is expected to spend about K805 million on the construction of concrete pavements on the 500-metre Gonthi road in the municipality.

The road, located behind the town’s central market, snakes from the Gonthi Liquor Shop turn-off and joins Mbeta Road, which branches from St. Joseph Parish to connect with the M1 Road.

In an interview, the Director of Public Works at the council Moses Zimba said that the project is part of government’s efforts to help the municipality attain secondary city status in line with the 2026 development agenda.

“I urge road users, residents and traders to be patient and cooperative as there will be some disruptions. Once it is completed, I urge everyone to take care of the infrastructure by avoiding misuse so that it can serve the community for a long time,” Zimba said.

One of the Kabaza operators in the municipality Elenelo Nyoni has commended the government for the project, saying the road was in a sorry state, leading to accidents and other challenges.

“The project is timely, because the road not only affected mobility but also diminished the beauty of the town. However, it is our plea that the government should continue rehabilitating all roads that are in poor condition in the municipality,” Nyoni added.

This development comes a year after the government also constructed a 3.2-kilometre loop road in the municipality.

The project is being financed by the government under the City Roads Fund, with Umodzi Wamatipa Construction contracted to complete the work by November 29, 2025.
