The Voyage to Parliament: Kasungu’s political winds shift after September 16

The voyage toward the September 16, 2025 polls reached its peak between July 14 and September 14, as campaign fever gripped Kasungu. Candidates took to rallies, markets, and community gatherings, making sweet promises to win parliamentary seats. When election day finally arrived, Malawians spoke through the ballot, choosing who would represent them in Parliament for the next five years.

In Kasungu, people elected five Members of Parliament from the just ousted Malawi Congress Party (MCP), four independent Members of Parliament, one from the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), and one from the People’s Party (PP).

To move from the Members of Parliament-elect status to assuming their roles as Members of Parliament, they were legally expected to take the oaths of allegiance and office—to truly defend the Constitution of Malawi, and serve all manner of people without fear, favor, or affection, among others.

Speaking after being sworn in on Tuesday at Parliament in Lilongwe, Noel Mkubwi, independent Member of Parliament for Kasungu Municipality, said time has come to go back and implement what earned him the seat.

“First and foremost, let me thank the people of Kasungu Municipality for entrusting me with this noble responsibility. Now that I have taken the oaths, I will make sure that I honor my promises because I believe that is why they elected me among many contestants.

We have poor roads, water supply problems, and other challenges — all these need to be addressed, and I will do my best to make the Municipality an area worth visiting.
We have women and youths who just need a push-up to uplift their lives, and I will do that,” said Mkubwi.

Another independent Member of Parliament for Kasungu South East, Professor Golden Chizimba, came escorted by his family, chiefs, and community members from the area. He said; “To me, I will serve them well. They trusted me with this responsibility. I know their needs — roads are in bad shape, hunger is prevalent, there is no medicine in clinics, and there is a lack of bursaries. So trust me, I will deliver; I will not disappoint the mandate given to me.”

In Kasungu Central Constituency, electorates sent to Parliament MCP candidate Chikondi Kampachike Chisale, and he said after being sworn in, “the new journey to serve the people of Kasungu Central Constituency and the Republic of Malawi has begun.”

A total of eleven Members of Parliament from Kasungu officially took their oaths of office, marking the completion of a two-day swearing-in ceremony held from October 27 to 28, 2025, at the Parliament Building in Lilongwe.

The Deputy Chief Justice, Lovemore Chikopa, presided over the ceremony, signifying the formal beginning of the 2025–2030 parliamentary term.
