Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre was filled to capacity with Malawians from all walks of life who thronged it to witness the swearing-in and inauguration of the country’s seventh President, Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika and his Vice President, Justice Dr. Jane Ansah.
This marks the return of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) to power after securing an insurmountable victory, surpassing the legal 50 percent plus one vote threshold in the September 16 presidential election.
In his inaugural address after taking the oath of office on Saturday, Professor Mutharika assured Malawians that he would not use the presidency as an avenue for personal gain or favoritism but as an opportunity to find lasting solutions to the challenges facing the nation.
The Head of State therefore urged Malawians to exercise patience as his administration implements recovery measures.
“We are facing multiple challenges, including shortages of foreign exchange and food, hence the need for Malawians to embrace patience, discipline, and hard work to rebuild the nation.
Malawi belongs to all of us, regardless of political, cultural, or religious background. So if anyone acts against the country, I will go after them. Never say I didn’t warn you,” he said.
Several dignitaries, including President Daniel Chapo of Mozambique, President Emmerson Mnangagwa of Zimbabwe, Tanzania’s Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa, and ministers from Angola, Namibia, Zambia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, among others, graced the ceremony under the theme ‘The Great Return to Proven Leadership.’
Also in attendance were the country’s second and fourth presidents, Dr. Bakili Muluzi and Dr. Joyce Banda, as well as the outgoing Vice President, Dr. Michael Usi.
