Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika has led the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) out of opposition, securing an insurmountable victory in the presidential race contested by 17 candidates.
This comes five years after the DPP was toppled from power by the Chakwera-led Tonse Alliance in the 2020 fresh election.
Mutharika appeared on the ballot with former Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) chairperson, Justice Jane Ansah, as his running mate.
Announcing the results on Wednesday evening, MEC Chairperson Justice Annabel Mtalimanja declared Mutharika the winner after amassing 3,035,249 votes, representing 56.8%, ousting all other contenders.
The outgoing president and Malawi Congress Party (MCP) leader, Dr. Lazarus Chakwera came second with 1,765,170 votes, followed by UTM president Dr. Dalitso Kabambe with 211,413 votes.
With the official presidential election results announced, MEC will now proceed to verify, reconcile, and validate parliamentary and local government election results before declaring winners.
