The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) torchbearer, Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, has garnered 1,520,982 votes, leaving Malawi Congress Party (MCP) leader, Dr. Lazarus Chakwera, a distant second by at least a million votes in nine districts and two cities.
During a press briefing held at the National Tally Centre in the capital city, Lilongwe, Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) chairperson, Justice Annabel Mtalimanja, announced the official presidential election results for the nine districts and two cities.
The districts include Machinga, Nkhotakota, Dowa, Chikwawa, Nsanje, Zomba, Mzimba, Balaka, and Thyolo, while the cities are Lilongwe and Blantyre, where Chakwera amassed 522,438 votes.
Justice Mtalimanja said these results bring the total number of districts where presidential results have been determined to 24 out of the 36 councils.
“We are now in a critical phase, with all results at the National Tally Centre coming from district tally centres. Each set of results undergoes a strict process of verification, reconciliation, and validation before being accepted.
This procedure takes time, but it is essential to guarantee that every figure announced is accurate and reliable,” added Justice Mtalimanja.
The law provides that MEC must determine and announce the final results of the presidential elections within eight days from the date of polling.
