The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has announced the official results for the presidential election in Kasungu Municipality Constituency, with Malawi Congress Party (MCP) leader Lazarus Chakwera amassing 8,818 votes to lead the race.
MEC Chairperson Justice Annabel Mtalimanja made the announcement at the National Tally Centre in the capital city, Lilongwe.
According to Justice Mtalimanja, Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) torchbearer Arthur Peter Mutharika has came second with 7,831 votes, followed by UTM president Dalitso Kabambe with 1,019 and the UDF candidate Atupere Muluzi with 229 votes.
“Kasungu Municipality had a total of 25,645 registered voters. A total of 18,614 voters turned out, representing 73 percent. There were 373 void votes and 18,241 valid votes” JusticeMtalimanja announced.
MEC also announced the official presidential election results for Likoma District Council, where DPP leader Arthur Peter Mutharika is leading with 4,177 votes, seconded by MCP candidate Lazarus Chakwera with 1,817.
In Luchenza Municipality, the DPP leader amassed 7,547 votes, while the MCP leader gained 336. In Mwanza, Mutharika is leading with 30,576 votes, followed by Chakwera with 2,228.
The Commission assured Malawians that it would continue sitting to ensure that it declares the final presidential election results within the eight days provided by law.
