Health authorities in Kasungu have applauded WaterAid for donating water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) facilities, as well as cleaning materials valued at K19 million.
Speaking after receiving the donation which includes chlorine and tap buckets, the Director of Health and Sanitation Services, Dr Emmanuel Golombe, described the support as timely, saying it complements efforts to contain the spread of cholera and other diseases.
“These are items we need most, especially during this rainy season when most communities are facing cholera threats. Once we distribute these materials, we will be able to promote hygiene and ensure the use of safe water in our health facilities,” said Golombe.
However, Dr Golombe appealed for more support, saying the sector is facing numerous challenges, including referral system difficulties and financial constraints, which are adversely affecting service delivery.
“We are failing to properly maintain our facilities due to limited funding, and many ambulances are not functional, making it difficult to refer patients. We are also facing staff shortages and challenges in providing patients with proper diets. We are asking partners to support us because government alone cannot manage,” he added.
Meanwhile, Hygiene Behaviour Change Specialist for WaterAid Mariya Soko said the donation seeks to prepare the health sector to respond effectively to disasters such as flash floods that may hit the district and require WASH facilities.
“Our goal is to ensure that people have access to clean and safe water, especially during this period when floods have increased the risk of waterborne diseases such as cholera. By supplying items like chlorine and other sanitation materials, we want to help health facilities maintain proper hygiene standards and protect communities from preventable diseases,” she said.
So far, Kasungu District has recorded five cases of cholera since the 2025/2026 rainy season commenced.
