The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) has selected the Africa Centre of Aquaculture and Fisheries Science (AquaFish) at the Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR) to host the prestigious DAAD In-Country/In-Region Scholarship Programme for Sub-Saharan Africa.
The selection follows a highly competitive process that reviewed 416 degree-track submissions from institutions across the region, positioning AquaFish as a leading centre of excellence in aquaculture and fisheries science.
According to an official communication from DAAD, the Master of Science in Aquaculture and Fisheries Science offered under AquaFish met all required criteria after undergoing a rigorous evaluation conducted by university professors and scientists serving in an honorary capacity.
The review assessed curriculum quality, institutional capacity, academic leadership, and alignment with regional development priorities—areas in which AquaFish demonstrated exceptional strength and relevance.
Commenting on the recognition, LUANAR Vice Chancellor Professor Emmanuel Kaunda commended AquaFish Director Professor Daud Kassam and the entire team for spearheading the successful application, noting that the partnership will enhance research productivity, expand student opportunities, and strengthen AquaFish’s leadership in the region.

“This milestone underscores AquaFish’s exceptional contribution to advancing aquaculture and fisheries science in Malawi and the region. It reflects the centre’s dedication to delivering world-class postgraduate training that responds to Africa’s development needs,” said Kaunda.
Meanwhile, DAAD has expressed enthusiasm for strengthening its collaboration with AquaFish and will soon begin discussions on the next steps toward full host-institution status under the scholarship programme.
The achievement reinforces AquaFish’s position as a premier hub for capacity building, scientific innovation, and postgraduate training, creating expanded pathways for students in Malawi and beyond to access high-quality education in aquaculture and fisheries science.
