Journalists, Civil Society urged to Seek Mental Health Support

A call has gone out to journalists and civil society organizations in Kasungu to seek mental health support whenever they feel traumatized in the course of their work.

These groups are prone to mental health challenges because a large part of their work involves amplifying the voices of the voiceless and holding authorities accountable — roles which are sometimes viewed negatively by those in power, who may retaliate by issuing threats.

Speaking during a psychosocial clinic session where journalists and members of civil society organizations were provided with psychosocial support, the district’s Mental Health Coordinator, Chris Mwambene said persistent depression can lead to low self-esteem and even suicide.

We are preparing journalists and organizations to overcome mental health problems by seeking help from us. They need such support because their work exposes them to cyberbullying and other forms of abuse from those who feel intimidated,” Mwambene said.

Mwambene also stressed the need for increased awareness of the mental health services provided at Kasungu District Hospital, saying many victims are not aware that help is offered free of charge at the hospital.

The District Civil Society Network chairperson, Braxton Banda described the training as an eye-opener.

The session has opened our eyes. We now know where to get support, because we are not immune to mental health challenges. We will also help raise awareness on the importance of seeking mental health assistance at the hospital,” he said.

On his part, Umunthu FM field officer for Kasungu, Collings Kalivute said the session is part of the ‘My Democracy, My Digital Rights’ campaign.

The campaign aims to empower journalists and activists to navigate safely online and to push back against threats and intimidation they encounter, while standing firm on democratic values.

This falls under governance and mental health support. We are defending freedom of expression while also providing psychosocial support and counseling to those traumatized online,” Kalivute added.

Umunthu Plus is facilitating the campaign in partnership with Umunthu FM and Chipembere Organization, with financial support from Civicus through the Digital Democracy Initiative.
