The country’s first citizen and Malawi Congress Party (MCP) leader, Dr. Lazarus Chakwera, has conceded defeat before the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) declares a winner in the September presidential election.
In his national address on Wednesday at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe, Dr. Chakwera congratulated Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) candidate Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, who has left him a distant second in the presidential race.
Dr. Chakwera said: “I called Professor Mutharika to congratulate him on his historic victory and to wish him well as the incoming President of the Republic of Malawi.”
Dr. Chakwera also assured Malawians of a peaceful transition of power to the incoming government, saying it will require collective effort to move the country’s development forward.
The Malawi leader, on the other hand, thanked Malawians for participating peacefully in the election, saying his decision to concede defeat is meant to respect the will of the people and the Constitution.
Today marks the eighth day since polling, and MEC is expected to announce the official presidential election results this evening.
